Love a lie-in? This “Sleepy Girl” trend is for you.
Blue Monday is coming and the third Monday of January has been given this moniker for good reason. Sky Travel, a UK travel company who created the label, claims is the most depressing day of the year.
Look, we get it. It’s literally freezing outside and our pay checks are taking longer than usual to kick in. After the excitement of New Years and Christmas, this return to reality can feel particularly rough under these conditions, and all we want to do is stay in bed.
If you, like me, are currently in a style limbo where nothing in your closet feels exciting and the frigid temps are forcing you to forgo any decent footwear, then I have something that might help.
In a cry for help, I scoured the internet for low-effort styling ideas, or “sleepy girl” outfits for exactly this time of year when getting dressed in the dark is a particularly grim affair.
Below, check out 5 “sleepy girl” outfit formulas that will let you snooze till the very last second. You’re most welcome.
1. THE KNIT ALL OVER

A knit jumper? Basic. Knits all over? Now that’s the cosiest statement look one could wear. We’re talking super-long scarves, ponchos, flared knit leggings. Ponchos are a good bet as they could be thrown over literally everything. A caveat: make sure they’re in the same colour or tones. When worn together, it would look coherent and intentional, rather than like you just rolled into a pile of your laundry. Bonus points for fringe or tasselled pieces as they add texture and nuance.
2. THE SWEATER DRESS

Take a page out of the French girl’s style book and adopt the sweater dress for your everyday wardrobe. Low-lift and oh-so-chic, it’s the rare fashion item that will allow you to look put-together no matter the setting, especially when accessorised with a designer handbag and large jewellery. Wear with tights and chunky loafers or layer on another jumper tied at the waist or slung nonchalantly over the shoulders.
3. THE JUMPER & SKIRT COMBO

Another fool-proof winter combo is the jumper and skirt outfit. The key here is to pick a jumper that is either oversized to pair with a slimmer, slinkier skirt (thermal tights highly recommended to be worn under) or, a more cropped jumper that you can wear with a flowy, floor-length skirt. Wear with your favourite trainers or booties. It’s as simple as that!
4. TRACK PANTS

If there’s one good thing about Zoom culture, it’s how we’ve all learned to embrace the track pant. And guess what? They can be worn to the office too; it’s all about how you style it. Because it’s such a casual silhouette, you want to try to add sophistication through other items, like your coat. Be sure to choose a coat with proper structure and in a statement colour or pattern like leopard, then pair with a small, sleek bag. The idea is to balance out the track pants with slightly more formal silhouettes.
5. THE SHEARLING JACKET

Tired of your puffer coat? Shearling is the dressier do-it-all option that allows you to look chic while still being ultra-cosy. It dresses up any outfit, really, whether thrown over a knit set or worn with flannel trousers. That’s because the cut and texture add a little bit of nuance and drama no matter what you put underneath. Consider this a PSA for you to invest in one, stat.
